Jay Reatard @ Music Knights
24th November, 2008, The Old Blue Last
Once again the free cocktails were flowing and the place was packed as Jay Reatard took to the stage at Shoreditch’s Old Blue Last for November’s Music Knights.
Former Reatards front man Jay Lindsey, now known as Jay Reatard, was as raw visually as he was musically.Unkept, unpolished and unrelenting, he crashed head on from one chord-heavy grungy song to the next, directing the evening in his signature lo-fi but high-octane way.
The Old Blue played its part perfectly too. Subtle, suitably small and slightly smelly, it provides the ideal backdrop, not dissimilar to the early spit-and-saw-dust, Memphis punk venues that Lindsey cut his teeth in.
The crowd were as raucous as any crowd you might have found in one of those aforementioned venues.
Jay may call himself Reatard, but he proved last night, when it comes to making music and performing it live, he is nobody’s fool.
