On a good day in Glasgow you can follow art students like ants around the Trongate. There are numerous independent art galleries in the area and you’re likely to see a large percentage of them bailing into Mono for a post, post, post-modernist afternoon of home brew.

The closest bar to our art school halls in Finniestoun was called Stereo, the sister bar to Mono located in the West End. It had a somewhat mythic reputation for innovating and inspiring new bands to play; Franz Ferdinand were on the cusp of exploding into the charts and they openly recounted Stereo as a creative influence. Together with friends, LuckyMe began running regular Friday and Saturday nights at Stereo. At the time we were the only night that Glaswegians could go to see live rap music, and we pulled totally fledgling acts into the spotlight. Resident DJs included Hud Mo, Mike Slott and FineArt.

The manager at the time was the lead singer of a band called Vera Cruz, who saw some talent, or at least some intent, in us, and started to get great shows for LuckyMe around the city. His efforts were massively influential in making us step up our game and bear witness to the richness of Glasgow’s musical tastes and heritage.

Stereo has since closed and reopened in an amazing space near the Central Station, but Mono has grown into one of our favourite haunts. It’s an effortlessly innovative place, a beautifully lit, Victorian era, administrative building-turned-vegan bar/café/restaurant and record store with a large open stage. There are a thousand reasons to spend time there. Mono has a real understated sense of fashion about it. They will hate me saying it, but the place is, to us, the very definition of cool.
