THE STORY:
LuckyMe, a family of artists, illustrators,
writers, DJs, vocalists and producers in Glasgow, were invited to explore their home city by exposing the spaces where connections were formed, influences absorbed and experiences shared, and so provide an insight into the city’s role in the formation of their distinct creative group. The project begins in the new issue of SUSOLOGY and ends right here.
In the early days, LuckyMe ran nights at the legendary Glasgow bar, Stereo. The early flyers for these gigs were adorned with an oblique phrase: ‘The Gloss, The Golden, The Hum and The Laser’. Its meaning, though nebulous, defined the attitude of a group unwilling to exist within conventional genres. For SUSO Create, LuckyMe have re-created each element of the phrase in physical spaces which, down the years, have played an integral role in the emergence of their artistic identity, both as individuals and as a group. They recorded these typographic sculptures with photography.
Four musical acts from LuckyMe then bought a record by other Scottish artists, each relating to one of the spaces, and each an influence on their own musical direction. The records were remixed in response to the spaces to create four unique pieces of music, exclusive to SUSO.
Wrapped in the heartfelt words of LuckyMe’s original founders, Dom Sum and Martyn Flyn, LuckyMe in the City is an evocative exploration of Glasgow’s creative spirit, and a multi-media portrait of the group's humble beginnings.
