GOD'S EYE VIEW

When Google is God, what happens when science, art and religion meet? Could you re-imagine Golgotha from a satellite?

W / OSCAR POWELL

The history of art is a history of religious inspiration. Western artists have turned repeatedly to the Bible, celebrating the mystery of faith through a very human genius. But what does this biblical imagery mean to us in a secular age?

James Dive of The Glue Society, an amorphous and provocative collective of artists, writers, designers and directors based in Australia, is behind an extraordinary set of images entitled 'God's Eye View'. At first glance, the pictures are beautiful, though familiar; technologies like Google Earth have made satellite photography a part of our everyday vernacular. But look a little closer at 'Eden', 'Cross', 'Ark' and 'Moses', and what do you see? The clue is in the name.
