American Superfish
ALL IT TAKES IS IMAGINATION. Michael Phelps.
The Chinese press, in a uniquely Chinese way, refer to him as the ‘American Superfish’, but as Michael Phelps waited imposingly on the blocks during the 4×100M Medley, it was their imaginations - and ours - which ran wild with the thought of what might unfold in the Cube, a pool paid for by China, but indisputably owned by the great wide-winged American.

God Went Surfing With The Devil
"A Katusha Grad rocket hit a mall in Ashkelon yesterday. Fourteen people were injured. The next day when we played at the beach, two Palestinian civilians and three gunmen were killed by IDF forces in the Gaza strip.”
Keep an eye out for this documentary. Skateboarder Alex Klein is in Israel and Gaza to tell the tale of life and surfing in the Middle East. Klein and his talented film crew are living alongside locals, spending day and night by their side as they laugh, eat, drink, surf, panic and cry.

Real Fans Wear Brown And Tan
Summer is here, it probably won’t last but we’ve learnt to deal with that. Meteorological mediocrity is part of our lives, in fact it probably defines us a bit. We complain when it’s too cold then moan when it’s too hot. In essence, we thrive on mediocrity. Another country rather fond of mediocrity is New Zealand. As a nation they are self deprecating, sarcastic and pretty relaxed. Their cricket side, traditionally at least, has represented that quite nicely.

Don't Worry, Be Happy
Regardless of success and its common units of measurement, fame and fortune, there is that enduring aspect of music that is born of love, devotion and in a few cases outrageous natural talent. Bobby McFerrin, who won Song of the Year in 1988 for ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ never came close to the top of the charts again but he has had an illustrious musical career since, including a period as guest conductor for the NY Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia and London Orchestras.

Johnny Lee And His 3d Wii
This fascinates me. Johnny Lee exposed his discovery on YouTube and the I.T world went crazy for it. He was then invited by the brilliant TED to deliver a talk, which thankfully breaks it down into slightly more basic terms for people like me (although it’s still quite nerdy). I admire Johnny for both his curious and creative mind, and also his attitude to knowledge sharing. He could have hidden away with his idea, or sold it to Nintendo or Apple. Instead, he made it available on his website for free.

Soundtrack To Life
“I pressed the button, and suddenly we were floating. It was an incredible feeling to realise that I now had the means to multiply the aesthetic potential of any situation." - Andreas Pavel
How far we have come. If your iPod is of the Nano persuasion, kudos to you. If you’re packing 6G’s, you rock. iTouch? Awesome. iPhone? Spectacular. Anything electronic that has pinching, flicking and caressing as standard operating procedures deserves all accolades.

And I Quote...
“You can’t handle the truth!”... “I’ll never let go, Jack.”... “I love you honey bunny.”... “Say hello to my little friend!”... “I’m... kind of a big deal”... “Do the chickens have large talons?”
You could never quote from, say, an Italian Neorealist film of the 1940’s (unless in the right crowd) because it would transport you to Ubergeek status. Quoting films is about shared experience. ‘We both saw that film, we both liked that bit, and now we are connected by something.’

We Were Robots
“Anyone who swims with the current will reach the big music steamship; whoever swims against the current will perhaps reach the source.” PAUL SCHNEIDER-ESLEBEN (Father to FLORIAN SCHNEIDER)
Florian Schneider, along with Ralf Hütter, was one of the founding members of Kraftwerk. If ever musicians swam against some kind of current, it was them. But so too did the other two long-standing members, Wolfgang Flür and Karl Bartos.

The Operators Interview
They met on the Isle of Wight in 2007 and self-released their first album "What You See Is What I Sell" earlier this year. The Operators are made up of Owen Taylor on Vocals, John Stevens on Bass, Charlie Westropp on Synths and Guitar and Ben Athey on drums.
I have managed to see them live a couple of times so in exchange for my sweat, well trodden-on feet and mild whiplash I thought they owed me answers to some tough and probing questions. Luckily Owen and Charlie could spare a moment:

Bye Bye Buzz
Woody and Buzz set the tone. They kicked it all off. We fell to our knees so we might touch the cloak of this magnificent new thing: the Lord of animation; images of the mind rendered in three dimensions.
Oh the possibilities. Oh the brilliance of it. But like any regime, we grew tired. The great paradigm shift was forgotten, and then the improvements became smaller and smaller, and we ceased to care quite so much. Okay, so it’s not quite as black and white as that, but new advances in CGI animation aren’t enough anymore. We are human beings. We crave stories, meaning, emotion, not technological advance, and these are the things that even the simplest animations can support.
