Tim Sure Does Sexy

"But the depth of construction in his photography makes it so much more."

Tim Bret-Day is not your average point and shoot photographer.  In fact he couldn't be further from one while still holding a camera in his hand.

Tim's area of speciality is two fold - on the one hand he is one of the worlds premier fashion photographers working with the likes of Agent Provocateur, Harvey Nichols, Marie Claire, L'Oreal, Adidas, David Beckham, Kylie Minogue (and so many more) - and on the other he is the master of the visual overload, a celebrated creator of fantasy and desire that so appeals to the high end fashion world.

He specialises in hugely elaborate images - decadent banquets, kinky semi-orgiastic feasts, celestial picnics - often awash with beautiful scantily clad women - therein marrying the ultra modern with the historically symbolic.  It is the imaginative, creative depth of construction in his photography, and the resulting glamour and gloss, that quite clearly sets him apart in his field.

To some the guiding idea behind much of his work is relatively simple - that women can be both sex object and dominatrix all rolled into one.  Check out some of his amazing work below and see what you think...

Down With The Puddycat

"The very idea of a remix was made for this..."

Peter Kay's fine work recently for Children In Need got us thinking as to just who or what owns the title of coolest, most iconic children's TV character.  The list of candidates is extensive...

In putting together our arguments amidst heated (occasionally strongly worded) studio discussion we came across this creative gem .... (be sure to give it plenty of volume.)

Sports 'personality' 2009

"I still have a dream of being Olympic Champion"

Throughout his career Hackney born Phillips ‘Olaosebikan’ Idowu has been accused of inconsistency and failing to fulfil his potential. In 2009, in landing the Gold Medal at the World Athletics Championships, he put an end to that debate. But the journey to gold has been fraught with obstacles that have only been overcome through a steely determination ... a determination often masked by his taste for fashion and the flamboyant.  And that's fundamentally what sets the elite apart ... not their talent but their unrelenting appetite to make something of their gifts in the face of daily adversity.

This is a man who has made it to the top from humble beginnings in a facility deprived London borough. A man who has had more than his share of injury and competition disappointment along the way. A man who for some years lived in the shadow of the nation’s squeaky clean favourite son. A man that, when asked to step up and become Jonathan Edwards successor, was criticised repeatedly for fashion over substance as he missed out tiem and again on the big title.

But ultimately this is a man who, in his relentless pursuit of his ultimate goal, has triumphed and in doing so with some style and no shortage of colour. On top of it all, when you ask around, Phillips has been able to do it all and remain a genuinely 'top bloke', respectful of fellow competitors, unassuming with us mere mortals, relevant and inspiring to the next sporting generation.  So when we talk Sports ‘Personality’ at the weekend, let’s look beyond simple sporting achievement and reflect upon the backdrop against which a titles were achieved and the sense of style with which they were delivered. Viewed as such Phillips is right up there in the reckoning. He gets my vote.

All great victories need a credible challenge, a worthy vanquished, and at the 2009 Berlin Championships, in Nelson Evora there was just that.  "Bring on 2012." - his words not mine.

King Of The Fancy Dress

"Halloween is coming..."

... and that means it's time to get creative with your costumes. It's no longer just about witches, ghosts and goblins ... these days it seems anything goes!  Tranformer rigs are all the rage...

And we have to say, if this guy turned up on the doorstep 'trick or treating' with a witches bag in hand, we'd be suitably impressed to the tune of one giant bag of marshmallows!

The King Of Cool

"You know what, that might be kinda fun."

Steve McQueen, Box Office Star signs up to a Daily Scale Stunt Contract in 1975

As the 30th anniversary of Steve MCQueen's death and a new biopic approach (Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig fighting it out for the lead), the extent to which the King Of Cool's life revolved around fast cars and bikes becomes a talking point for us all.

Born five months after the Great Depression to alcoholic parents who abandoned him in his youth McQueen was dyslexic, alone, and in and out of reform school until the age of 18.  However, a love of motorsport kept him off the booze and out of prison.  As his acting career took shape he was never one to be found waiting for the phone to ring.  Quite simply Steve McQueen had his bikes, and this was a passion he carried throughout his acting career.

One story goes that having just filmed Towering Inferno for a reported $14m, McQueen called a buddy looking to go for a bike ride in the desert.  This friend, a stunt rider, couldn't make the trip in that he had a job the next day on a film called Dixie Dynamite (I know what you're thinking...). For $174-50 daily rate, McQueen signed up to a day of sliding corners, sailing jumps and laying down crashes.  In all the excitement one wheelie got the better of him and he came off the back infront of everyone.  Truly one of the guys, his stunt crew loved him for it.

This love of bikes was never more apparent than in the final scenes of On Any Sunday in 1971.  As a biker what I'd give to be able to play in the sand like that with my buddies today.  Alas green laning (freeriding in the off road UK) is fast become extinct but in the US in the 70s this was on tap!  If you haven't seen the film the end scene is well worth a view here.

A simple idea beautifully delivered.

And you know what, whether you agree or disagree with who and what is on there, the whole thing works.  Makes you want to see the art and copy in an exhbition for real.  Check it out at theimpossiblecool.tumblr.com/

EXQUISITE MENACE

Exquisite Menace

Vulgar? Ostentatious? Indulgent? Symbols of all that's wrong with high end fashion? All of these things ring true of these, we think. And rarely do we celebrate such things. In fact, we refuse to. But in this case, we were coaxed into it by those two cunning serpents of design, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Yes, we know, these gas masks are meaningless and vile, but we couldn't resist. We succumbed to the surface allure of fashion, to the novelty and extravagance of it all, to temptation itself.

We hang our heads in shame. We deserve expulsion. We have sinned.
