OK LASER

I LIKE THE IDEA OF USING TECHNOLOGY IN A WAY IT WASN’T MEANT TO BE USED. Thom Yorke

It’s fair to say there’s been a fair bit of excitement brewing over the last few days regarding the new Radiohead video for the In Rainbows song House of Cards. No one’s seen it yet as it hasn’t hit YouTube etc, but we know it’s different because, true to the band’s legendary dedication to experimentation and new technologies, they decided not to use cameras at all.

Instead they used the Velodyne Lidar system which uses some 64 lasers and structured light (come again?) to capture 3D images in time and space.

But doesn’t that kind of make it a camera anyway, a device used to visually record images? Probably, yes. Still, it’s not for me to pick apart what looks, from the images at least, to be a cool idea. Typical Radiohead really: disruptive and different. We’ll post the video here when it’s up; or you can keep tabs on this link which will apparently host the video first.
